ADHD assessment & management.

ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental condition in New Zealand and is increasingly recognised in adults.

Since 1 February 2026, the scope of general practice in Aotearoa New Zealand has expanded to enable appropriately trained and authorised General Practitioners (GPs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) to assess, diagnose, and initiate treatment for ADHD in adults 18 and over.

Our Assessment Process

  1. Pre-screening
Complete questionnaires to assess symptoms and impact.
  2. Comprehensive assessment (60–90 mins)
Clinical interview, history, and diagnostic evaluation.
  3. Management plan
Diagnosis (if appropriate), treatment options, or referral if needed.

Treatment may include education, lifestyle strategies, and medication where appropriate.

Costs (Private Service)

  • Assessment: $540–$780
  • Investigations (if required): $130–$300
  • Treatment consultation: $390–$540
  • Follow-up: $130 per 15 mins

How to arrange an assessment

Email our ADHD team to begin the process. They will reply with information about the next steps.

Following this initial reply:

  • If you are enrolled with a Coastal Medical clinic, we will send you an ADHD Assessment Pre-Screening Pack to complete.
  • If you are enrolled with another medical centre, we will require a referral from your GP. You will then need to complete a Casual Patient Form before we can proceed.
  • Once we have received and reviewed the required information, we will arrange your clinical ADHD assessment or contact you to discuss other management options if a different care pathway may be more appropriate.

Please allow approximately two to three weeks for this process. Timeframes may vary depending on your individual circumstances.
